How to correctly install rubber expansion joints?

2025-04-30

Installation steps
1. Preliminary inspection

Check whether the product model, pressure level, and material match the pipeline system.

Check whether there are defects such as cracks, scratches, or bulges on the surface of the rubber expansion joint.

Confirm that the bolt holes of the flange or interface are aligned with the pipeline.

2. Pipeline alignment

Ensure that the pipeline flanges on both sides are parallel and concentric to avoid forced pulling and causing rubber distortion.

If the pipeline offset is large, the pipeline bracket should be adjusted first, and it is forbidden to use the expansion joint for forced correction.

3. Installation direction

There is no direction requirement for the ordinary type, but the bolt direction should be noted for the anti-pull-off limit device (the limit rod faces outward).

The different-diameter expansion joint (large and small heads) needs to be installed according to the flow direction of the medium: the large-diameter end is connected to the inlet.

4. Bolt tightening

Tighten the bolts step by step in a diagonal orderto ensure uniform force.

The bolt length should be moderate to avoid excessive damage to the rubber layer or too short to cause looseness.

It is recommended to use gaskets to enhance sealing.

5. Pre-compression/pre-stretching

Pre-compression or pre-stretching (usually 50% of the total compensation) during cold installation according to the displacement (ΔL) provided by the manufacturer.

For example: the designed axial compression is 10mm, and the pre-compression is 5mm during installation.
